This is the Surp Giragos church from inside. It was known as the biggest church in the middle east and his tower was the tallest point in Diyarbakir, higher than all minarettes which brings the Armenians in contention with the local muslims.. However in view of the Genocide under the reign of the Gouvernour Mehmed Reschid the Church was closed. On May 28, 1915 the Ottomans bombed the bell tower with artillery canons and forced the prelate to watch it till they killed him too. Between 1913-1918 the German army used the Cathedral as a headquarter. After the foundation of the Turkish Republic the Church becomes a Store and Factory. In the 1950er years it was given back to the last remaining Armenian Community in Turkey. Despite the efforts of the Diaspora the church was neglected and left to decay. In the early 1990’s, during a series of severe snowstorms, sections of the roof of the cathedral collapsed, eventually leaving the basilica with just four walls and no protection from the elements. Vandals caused serious damage to the altars as they chipped away the mosaics and tore out the artwork and gold overlay. The floor of the basilica was mired in mud and debris for many years, and most of the metalwork has corroded in the interim. However as a sign of reconcilation the turkish government fully restaured the church on the 22, October 2011. As you can see on the second picture. It was the first church which was revived in Anatolia. But later they changed their opinion again. On 26 March 2016 the Turkish government confiscated the Cathedral. Neighbouring Syriac, Chaldean and Protestant churches were also expropriated as part of the same decision. During the past two tumultuous years, the church has been desecrated and largely damaged again.
